Attention lovers of sustainable fashion: Allbirds, a company that’s leaving a smaller eco footprint (pun intended), has temporarily taken up shop at Nordstrom. The label makes stylish and comfy sneakers out of natural materials like merino wool, eucalyptus tree fiber and castor beans rather than synthetic materials and take measures to reduce energy consumption in the manufacturing process. And we think that’s extremely cool.
Stylish tennies and sneakers are having a major fashion moment right now, with designs inspired by the ‘90s and ‘80s coming back. The Allbirds shoes take this trend on with a classic approach with sleek, no-fuss designs that come in three styles: the Runner (a classic sneaker), the Lounger (a slip-on) and the Skipper (a boat shoe). Each style also comes in a wide variety of colors and patterns so that they can be easily mixed and matched with different looks. In particular, we’re really digging the Nordstrom Hawthorn for the Runner and Tui Light Red for the Lounger. And they’re all just $95.
But just how much better for the earth are these kicks than your average pair of low tops? According to the company, the merino wool from New Zealand meets strict standards for sustainable farming and animal welfare and requires 60 percent less energy to produce than synthetics. The FSC-certified eucalyptus tree pulp that is 3D knitted for the mesh styles has 17 times less of an environmental impact than other shoes. Meanwhile the insoles are made from a plant oil-based foam that is derived from sustainably grown castor beans and the laces are made from recycled plastic bottles. So basically… a lot.
Another reason to love these sneaks: they’re super comfy. Did you know that the merino is naturally moisture wicking and regulates temperature, or that eucalyptus mesh is silky-smooth and breathable for ultimate all-day shoes? We’re not saying you should wear these everywhere from work to a wedding. But we won’t blame you if you’re a little tempted.
