Leave it to Rihanna to give classic red lipstick a fresh update. The singer-turned-makeup mogul did just that in November, dropping a stunning red color she so coolly named “Uncensored.” The matte, intensely pigmented liquid, like the lip gloss she released before it, is intended for all skin tones. To promote the addition to her growing Fenty Beauty collection, she put her money where her mouth is — literally — posting her very own tutorial on Instagram (appropriately set to the tune of her hit “Watch N’ Learn”). But for all our burning questions about the gorgeous shade, we turned to her makeup artist Priscilla Ono, whose clients include Iggy Azalea, Kelly Rowland and Paris Hilton. Watch the pro’s How It’s Done video above for her fool-proof tips for pulling off the bold look.
Skin prep is still an important first step for any makeup — so Ono applies a light layer of Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer to reduce the appearance of pores and prevent any unwanted shine. Next she blends Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation down the neck so there’s no obvious line of demarcation. Using cream highlighters, Ono brightens the eye area, chin and between the brows and creates a contour along the hollows of the cheeks and outer edges of the face, jawline and nose. After diffusing any harsh lines with a brush and a makeup sponge (that has a bit of foundation on it), she dusts on a coppery blush (in this instance a mix of Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Ginger Binge/Moscow Mule) to give the cheeks a hint of color. Ono completed the look with Rihanna’s Stunna Lip Paint.

“Not only is the formula super long-wearing, but it also doesn’t feather, so there’s no need for liner. It’s called Lip Paint for a reason – once you apply, trust me, it’s not going anywhere,” explains Ono, who adds that the product’s doe-foot applicator is equally as impressive as the formula. “When it comes to red lips, in particular, precision is the most important part of the application. This ultra-precise doe foot gives those smooth lines very easily.”
But of course no red lip look would be flawless without a few genius tips, which Ono bestowed on us. “Whenever putting on any lip color, but especially with a liquid formula, you have to make sure the lips are exfoliated first to remove any flakes or dead skin. You don’t want the color to catch onto any dry patches which would make the lips look uneven. Just like your face, lip care is just as important to ensure a smooth application! And at the end of the end of the night, you’ll want to use an oil-based gentle makeup remover to really take off all traces of color.”
